Mak Spotting Scope

Celestron 52268 C90 Mak Spotting scope

This scope delivers high powered optics but is still compact and affordable. You can even do some astronomy with this, particularly closer things like the moon or comets. The package includes a backpack style soft carrying case, an 8×21 erect image finder scope, a 1.25 inch size correct image 45* prism diagonal, and a fully coated 32mm plossl eyepiece for a magnification of 39X.

Okay, now the technical stuff. The C90 uses a combination of mirrors and lenses creating a “folded” optical system that has a focal length of 1250mm in a body only twelve inches long. The Maksutov design delivers high power views without a trace of the chromatic aberration, also called blue fringing, that can distort high power views in competing refractor style spotting scopes. At 40X magnification where some low cost spotting scopes start to seem fuzzy, the C90 is just getting started. The C90 uses the same 1.25 inch eyepieces used in astronomical telescopes. The standard equipment 32mm plossl eyepiece yields a magnification of 39X, but many other eyepieces can be used to vary the magnification.

I am a swingle working mom with two beautiful daughters and am just getting started in this whole online thing. I am a bicycle enthusiast and I love to ride every chance I get. My daughters aren't quite as excited, but we're still working on it. Since my girls are older now and turned out great, I guess that makes me something of an expert on educational toys because I sure bought and played with enough of them!

This kit is good value for money and is significantly cheepar than buying the components individually. But despite it being named `Astromaster Accessory kit’ it is not fully compatible with all Astromaster scopes. One of the key pieces in this kit is the 2x Power lens. This 2x lens is mounted on a threaded Barlow tube which means that a T-mount ring can be attached to the tube and to that can then be attached an SLR camera. The problem occurs though if you are using an Astromaster 70mm refractor. The documentation that comes with the kit shows the doubling lens/Barlow tube nicely fitted into the focusing tube of an Astromaster 90mm refractor but unfortunately the focusing tube of the Astromaster 70mm refractor is too small for the diameter of the doubling lens (this may not be an issue with the Astromaster Reflectors as they have a different eye piece mount, though it is best to check first). Celestron Support suggest putting the doubling lens/Barlow tube into the `diagonal’ (which may have some use for general viewing) though this then invalidates its use for photography as the image is then inverted and, because the camera is then effectively mounted on a lever at right angles to the focusing tube the eyepiece set screws cannot hold the weight of the camera safely. Overall this kit is probably a good investment, the only weak point being the un-stated lack of compatibility with the Astromaster 70mm Refractor.
